Take a walk through Nowra's Greek cafes

Hayley Warden

Nowra’s cafe culture, like many other country towns, is synonymous with the Greek community.

The majority of Greek cafe owners in Nowra migrated from Kythera, a small Greek island. They introduced espresso and cappuccino to the town, something which was totally beyond the experience of many people at that time.

There are many who would remember the copper lined green stone with the word ‘Cafe’ set into the ornate red terrazzo floor of the New York Cafe, which remains beneath the  Angus & Robertson book store carpet in Junction Street.

And who could forget the fifties style eating booths in The Red Rose Cafe
