PRESS RELEASE no. 9

After the successful organisation of the three previous symposia (1st International Symposium of Kytheraismos on Kythera 2004, 2nd International Symposium in Canberra, Australia 2006, 3rd International Symposium on Kythera 2008) the 4th International Symposium of Kytheraismos is being organised at Kytheroupolis Alimos Attiki on 9th – 12th September 2010.
This Symposium has as its theme: Kytherian and Philo-Kytherian Youth of the World: childhood dreams, youthful aspirations, high-level achievements. It will be opened on the 9th of September 2010 by the President of the World Council of Helenes Abroad, Mr. Stephanos Tamvakis. The opening will take place in the courtyard of the Holy Church of Panayia Myrtidiotissa in Alimos.
The themes that will be discussed include burning issues which are of concern to our youth. Such things include: adult learning (education, mobility, post-education, training), voluntarism (2011, European Year of Voluntarism) needs and social exclusion of youthful migrants (2010, European Year of Poverty and Social Exclusion), whilst not omitting the participation of youth in global issues (climate change, human rights, etc.) and the use of new technology, specifically the Internet (which makes up a special unit in the Symposium).
At the same time there will be three thematic workshops being run which will deal with participation in public affairs, voluntarism and the Kytherian multiculturalism of our youth, as well as a panel discussion on the Philo-Kytheraismos of the youth.
The proceedings of the Symposium will take place in the Functions Hall of the Alimos Music School (on the corner of 69 Kytherion Avenue and Dimitros Street). In the framework of the programme “Kytheroupolis: Cultural Capital of World-wide Kytheriasmos 2010-2012” a number of cultural activities, music and dance events from young groups are being organised on the near by Lofos Pani.
The speakers come from all over the Universe Kytherian (Kythera, the Attiki region, Australia, the U.S.A., and Cyprus etc.). Amongst them are academics, politicians and local government representatives who live and work in other countries. There will also be speakers participating from Greece who are involved in youthful matters (education, training, etc.) and who deal with problems faced by young migrants on Kythera as well as representatives from organisations, associations and other bodies.
The aim of this Symposium is to bring together the ideas of Kytherian youth around the world, the proximity of its diverse views and the convergence of their different culture as a result of the cultural stimuli in the places where they live and work, as well as to programme their activities on a global level. Special emphasis will be placed on the learning of the Greek language by Kytherians abroad and immigrants to Kythera, with specific sections on language and culture.
