The society of
the friends of the National Archaeological Museum
organized lecture on the 26 November 2012 at 19.00 in the Auditorium of the National Archaeological
Museum , in Athens . Main speaker was Dr. Dimitris Kourkoumelis,
from the Ephorate of Maritime Antiquities and the subject was “The shipwreck of
the Mentor to
Kythera”.
Dimitris
Kourkoumelis talked about the results of the underwater excavation during the
last year (June-July 2012).
First, he
referred to the ship “Mentor ”
which is under the water. He described it as a brigantine, the way it was
built, that it was in the port
of Piraeus in September
of 1882, he gave the names of the captain(William Eglen) and some of the
important people of the crew.
Dimitris said
the story under which conditions the shipwreck took place, the two years time
for the refloating, the personal items of the crew as well as the previous
efforts of underwater excavations in the shipwreck. (the first one in 1875, the
second in 1976, in 1980, in 1984 etc)
Finally,
Dimitris thanking the organizers of the event to be successful (the Society of
the Friends of the National Archaeological Museum), he mentioned of the good
team of the summer and of course the great supporters, the “Stavros Niarchos
Foundation”, the Kytherian Research Group and of course the people who attended
the lecture.
